The story follows Christopher “Scully” Crockett La Cruz, a spindly and highly theatrical actor who was born and raised on a low-gravity lunar satellite, “Circumluna”. After World War III devastated most of Earth, the former state of Texas expanded its borders to include most of North and Central America. The Texans, who believe their isolationist and anti-intellectual culture is morally superior, have used hormone treatments to become giants. They have also genetically modified the subjugated Mexican population into a class of diminutive “Mex” slaves. When Scully arrives on Earth to claim a family mining interest in what he believes is still Canada, he finds himself in Greater Texas. His tall, lanky frame, which requires a powered exoskeleton to function in Earth’s gravity, makes him look like a ghostly, skeletal figure. This appearance, along with his theatrical flair, leads the Mexican underclass to see him as a prophesied leader, “El Esqueleto” (the skeleton), who will lead their revolution. What follows is a farcical adventure in which Scully, an unwilling revolutionary driven by theatrical vanity and opportunism, is drawn into the conflict. He uses his acting and oratorical skills to incite rebellion among the oppressed Mexicans and eventually finds himself navigating the absurd politics of Greater Texas while juggling romantic interests with both a Texan and a Mexican woman.
