The story follows the adventures of the Phantom Detective, a master sleuth whose real identity is Richard Curtis Van Loan, as he investigates a series of bizarre and spectacular murders at the Sayles-Morrow Circus. The crimes lack an apparent motive and employ macabre methods, creating a “freak show of fantastic murders” that throws the entire circus into a panic. As the death toll rises and spreads to the audience, the Phantom finds his own life in peril while he works to untangle a savage web of big-time swindlers, blackmail, and an impenetrable mystery.
